- Using goats is the most environmentally friendly
way to eliminate unwanted weeds and brush and restore native
species.
- Goats are comfortable working on steep slopes
where clearing with machinery is impossible, clearing by
hand might be dangerous and burns are inadvisable.
- Goats eat
ladder fuels up to six feet in height. Goats will even
climb up into tress to eat ladder fuels, if the tree is accessible.
Ladder fuels are the vegetation, consisting of bush and low
lying branches on trees, which enable a fire to reach the
top crown of the tree. Once a fire reaches the crown of a
tree it is difficult for the fire fighters on the ground
to reach and it produces burning embers capable of traveling
long distances and from one tree crown to the next.
- Using
heavy machinery to clear unwanted vegetation can result
in damage to the environment and may ultimately start a fire
in dry vegetation.
- Goats help improve native vegetation.
As the goats graze, they are recycling everything they
eat as fertilizer.
- Using goats can eliminate the use of pesticides
on noxious weeds.
- Goats can eradicate an undesirable plant
after consecutive years of grazing. When a goat is first
turned out into a new grazing cell the goat walks the cell
eating off all of the flower heads. The goat will then return
to the plant and strip its stalk of its leaves. Because the
plant no longer has a flower head or leaves, it cannot photosynthesize,
therefore it starts to draw its energy from its root system,
which eventually will deplete and destroy the root system.
- It is much more pleasant to listen to the
sound of a goat bell ringing then the sound of machinery
operating.
- Controlled burns, in addition to polluting
the air, are sometimes not controllable and actually result
in instigating a wildfire.
- Goats don’t
contribute to global warming; they don’t
produce noise pollution or create fire hazards
while working.
- Goats are cost effective.
- Goats don’t call in sick; they show
up on time and are always happy while performing their work.
They’re a pleasure to watch while working on your project.
